what is it?
Overselling is a term used to describe a situation in which a company provides hosting plans that are unsustainable if every one of its customers uses the full extent of services advertised. The term is usually referred to the web space and bandwidth transfer allowance.

If a customer wishes to run a high-traffic, professional, or business website an oversold hosting account can be detrimental.

Many web hosting comapnies big and small are guilty of doing this. They often have their website on a fast server, that isn’t oversold so that their website is fast and responsive. Their customers are then placed onto a different server that is oversold and results in a slow and unreliable website for their customers.

Other companies offer Unlimited storage and Unlimited bandwidth for very little money, however, Servers cost money, as does bandwidth and hard drives, you can’t offer a quality service if you are overselling your packages.

To offer unlimited packages companies rely on the hope that most customers do not use any significant portion of their resources. If a customer has a small, low-traffic site serving static HTML pages, few resources will be used, however, this isn’t the case anymore as the majority of people who have a website will use it for media, image hosting, holiday video hosting, perhaps hosting files, and if there are thousands of customers on a single server, it will degrade the level of service down to a crawl. Furthermore, services from these companies often restrict you on features, not allowing access to databases and other facilities, this is due to the fact that databases require server processing power, and on an oversold server this can also bring the server to its knees.

At DigitalShadow we monitor our servers and ensure that they are never overloaded, we never oversell on our servers. We only use the best quality server  hardware. Check our server specification here.
