size matters
Asus Eee, MSI Wind, Dell Inspiron Mini 9, HP Mini Note and the Acer Aspire One are some of the netbooks you can buy today.

The term netbook has become the industry standard term for these mini laptops, even though the company Psion has recently started claiming its rights to the term NetBook.

At DigitalShadow we use the Asus Eee 900, ours came with Linux installed, this choice was made as the linux version has a bigger second SSD in comparison to the Windows XP version. Many of these NetBooks have normal Hard Drives within them, albeit physically smaller than desktop hard drives, we cannot reccomend these NetBooks. We are firm believers of netbooks only using SSD, this usually results in a smaller amount of storage space being available, as per Gb of storage SSD’s are more expensive than HDD’s, to keep prices at an affordable level, the NetBooks with SSD’s will have a smaller amount of storage. Storage in some NetBooks can be addeed to by either the use of a memory card, like a SDHC card, these can add as much as 32Gb extra storage. We have since installed Windows Vista Basic onto the machine to bring it up to date.

The majority of netbooks can actually run Vista, however, the performance can suffer slightly under Vista in comparison to XP. However, the new Windows 7 beta runs faster than XP in most cases, read our article on Windows 7 to find out more.

There is a program called vLite that can be used to remove aspects and features from Vista. Something that should be noted, for example the Asus Eee series of netbooks don’t officially support windows vista, and as such they warn users that certain features may not work under vista. However, in our experience we have noticed no problems running Vista on an Eee NetBook.

The price of these NetBooks range from £200 upwards and for a fully working computer it is a bargain.

The processors aren’t as fast as the ones you would find in a full size laptop or desktop, however, these low power processors enable these little machines to achieve really impressive battery life for their size. The atom based Asus Eee 901 has achieved over 8 hours of battery life in independent tests.

Upgrdaing the Ram of these machines is often the first thing to do as we recently have, also you can often upgrade the SSD to a faster one.

Check on the internet for NetBook reviews, and join the small revolution.
